13.04.2010 Amplicon take centre-stage in Digi distribution

Industrial networking and computing specialists Amplicon are set to become the primary distributor for Digis extensive range of connectivity hardware in the UK. With investment in stock staff and the addition of over 300 new products on Amplicons website comes the consolidation of a 6 year relationship designed to push sales figures to the next level.Gina Citroni Amplicon CEO commented: Recent discussions with Digis European management team highlighted a mutual opportunity for increased co-operation. Both sides have grasped the nettle and we are already starting to see an increase in business.+rdquo; It is hoped that Amplicons 15 strong sales team will be able to generate new business for Digis legacy products such as console servers terminal servers and serial communications boards and converters. The major growth will be driven from a new cost-effective range of Industrial grade cellular routers. Digi have made progress in the cellular router market through internal product development and the acquisition of Sarian Systems in 2008. A new version of the best-selling +lsquo;Digi Connect WAN series router provides HSUPA connectivity serial and Ethernet connections an extensive feature set and 5 year warranty for under +pound;400. Such a proposition has not previously been available in the market and interest is expected to be very high.

07.04.2010 Amplicon announces the new iCON series of Ethernet Extenders

Do you understand Ethernet Extenders? Technically they are not difficult to grasp but the question really is do you understand how much time and money they could save you? Do you realise they could earn you a promotion? Are you aware that they could represent an entirely new revenue stream for your business?Ethernet extenders use DSL (Digital Subscriber Line +ndash; technology used by Telcos to transmit high-speed broadband data from the telephone exchange to your house over your phone line) to extend Ethernet links up to 10km over a single pair of low-grade copper wires. The units operate transparently as part of an existing network with no drivers to install or complex setup procedures. All + IP+ traffic that could be sent across a standard patch cable can be sent across an Ethernet Extender link. The potential to save money using Ethernet Extenders becomes very apparent when they are used instead of a fibre-optic link or a wireless bridge. An old pair of telephone wires or some defunct RS485 cabling from a security camera can suddenly become a very precious commodity on a site that requires long-range Ethernet connections. Even in simple applications where a run of Cat5 cable exceeds the 100m distance limit for Ethernet Ethernet Extenders can be deployed to save the cost of signal repeaters power supplies and associated housings for the equipment. In a highly competitive market simply being aware of an Ethernet Extender solution could transform your business fortunes.David Evans Product Development Manager at Amplicon comments: There is a huge potential for these products in both industrial and IT based applications. The difficulty lies in educating the market because the + you appeal+ is specific to each and every customer. Our Ethernet Extender products have been used in submarines nuclear plants on trains in observatories and even in Graceland - Elvis Presley+ s estate.He continues: We are also delighted to announce the addition of the new iCON series of Ethernet Extenders to our range. They are rugged versatile and the selling price that we have achieved on this line will open up many more avenues of opportunity.+rdquo;For further details click here iCON series

01.03.2010 Amplicon add value with WebEx

In an age where cost-cutting and outsourcing of critical functions (such as the much hated overseas call centre) are reducing customer service levels across the board Amplicon are bucking the trend with investment in a new WebEx facility. WebEx is an easy to use online conferencing system that will give customers direct access to Amplicons technical experts and to Amplicons suppliers in the US and far-east.
14.09.2009 Green computing with Amplicon’s ATOM PC

Amplicon have recently launched the Impact-E 30 series of ATOM based embedded computers adding new innovation to Amplicons existing Industrial PC range. Features of the Impact-E 30 series include:Extremely low power only 11W (idle) with Windows XP installedCapable of operating in temperatures from -20 to +50+deg;CVery rugged design with industrial grade power supply and chassis6 x COM ports and Dual gigabit LAN as standardPCI and PCI Express expansion slots for 3rd party plug-in cards The Impact-E 30 series are next generation embedded computer systems that utilise the ATOM N270 processor to achieve high performance at very low power consumption +ndash; typically around 11W with Windows XP Professional installed. With such low power requirements it is feasible to power these systems from a solar panel or battery.The total energy saving of Amplicons ATOM solution in large roll-outs can be huge compared with typical consumption of a Core 2 Duo system +ndash; this means reduced costs for the end user and green kudos for the system integrator or OEM.The other key feature facilitated by an ATOM processor is the wide -20 to +50+deg;C operating temperature making in-vehicle and roadside or trackside applications a possibility. Most PCs capable of running Windows XP cannot achieve such wide temperature ranges making the Impact-E30/35 especially appealing for military projects.Impact-E 30 has a PCI expansion slot and Impact-E 35 has a PCI Express expansion slot allowing 3rd party cards to be added to the system. Both products have a rugged fanlessdesign with dual Gigabit LAN 4 x RS232 2 x RS232/422/485 selectable and 6 x USB 2.0 ports. The units also have dual video output with 1 x VGA and 1 x DVI-D as well as 8 x digital I/O lines onboard.Early prototype orders for the system will see the Impact-E 30 employed in power monitoring and digital signage applications with interest also emerging from rail integrators and military customers.David Evans Product Development Manager at Amplicon comments:We have witnessed a great rush over the last year for Industrial PC suppliers to get an ATOM based computer to market. Although we are not first to market the additional time has allowed us to deliver an impressive product at an exceptional price.We are confident that customers will be delighted by the build quality and technical features of this industrial product and amazed when they find that prices start at under +pound;500 for volume orders.+rdquo;

Always happy to dispel the myth that there is no such thing as a free lunch Amplicon will be hosting a free seminar at their Brighton HQ on 23rd September 2009. The content has been devised based on current and future trends in +lsquo;Automation. The day is designed to give system integrators solution providers and OEMs a critical insight into technologies such as Industrial Ethernet 3G Cellular communications solid state storage and many other emerging technologies.The event marks the launch of the +lsquo;Universal Architecture from Amplicon +ndash; a vision of how all future automation systems will be built regardless of the vertical market.+lsquo;Universal Architecture recognises the major trend of using Industrial Ethernet for communication and Industrial computers for data processing / visualisation as the core building blocks for industrial systems. The current trend in industry mirrors developments in the IT market 25 years ago when PCs Ethernet and TCP/IP emerged as the de facto technologies for office automation.Subjects covered in the seminar which are at the heart of the +lsquo;Universal Architecture are:Cellular (3G / GPRS) routers - provide cable-free access to the internet and to other remote sites.Serial to Ethernet converters - allow legacy RS232/422/485 devices to be used in an IP based network.Industrial Ethernet - the network infrastructure achieved through the deployment of Industrial Ethernet switches.Industrial computers - the data processing and visualisation +lsquo;brains of the system.Remote I/O modules +ndash; facilitates the communication of digital and analogue signals from a myriad of sensors across an IP network.David Evans Product Development Manager at Amplicon comments:There is a silent revolution in Industrial Automation at the moment and whilst some of our customers have embraced critical new technologies many more are unaware of all the options available to them.
22.07.2009 Amplicon launches unique ‘Test Systems’ service

Amplicons new Test Systems Division has been developed to provide system integrators and end-users with the widest range of test system hardware at a price that only a manufacturer and tier 1 distributor can offer. PXI Compact PCI (cPCI) LXI and PC-based systems along with an extensive product integration service provides customers with a finished hardware platform allowing them to concentrate on their specific area of expertise +ndash; typically the addition of a bespoke test software application. Test Systems Product Manager John Hayward comments:We have manufactured the components for Test Systems such as Industrial PCs and data acquisition boards for many years. Despite the decline in UK and European manufacturing we have found substantial demand for the supply of integrated hardware test solutions and we are now responding to that demand.+rdquo; He continues: In a recent application Amplicons PC based test system provided a saving of over +pound;100 000 compared to in-house development at a major oil and gas instrumentation specialist. It is our position as a manufacturer and Tier 1 distributor that allows us to supply very cost competitive solutions. Our major challenge now is to communicate this capability to a fractious and un-ordered market.+rdquo; In the current trend of out-sourcing non-critical functions many companies have reduced knowledge and manpower for implementing new test systems and upgrading existing lines.Power calculations for PC power supply + UPS specifications; selection of appropriate signal conditioning for connection to the myriad sensors and transducers in the market; data transfer limitations of system busses such as PCI and VXI and advanced triggering and synchronisation for time-dependent measurements need to be considered when designing a suitable test system solution.
15.07.2009 A Sexy Cellular Solution from Amplicon

The new ioLogik W5340 Active Ethernet I/O module uses quad band GPRS for communication over the mobile telephone network from anywhere in the world. It can monitor both analogue and digital signals from instruments and switches whilst control is provided by relays or digital outputs. I/O can be controlled remotely by any SCADA system using Modbus TCP or OPC. The W5340 uses Active messaging to send alarms or other messages when water levels or similar limits are exceeded. Click +lsquo;n Go+rdquo; logic provides local PLC-like control which could be particularly useful if and when the local GPRS signal is lost.John Hayward Product Manager for Measurement and Control at Amplicon commented: The combination of Active remote I/O and a GPRS router in one package will enable our customers to save purchase costs and reduce cabinet size. It is a very innovative product with an in-built solution for dealing with SIM cards that only have a private static IP address.+rdquo;Modern cellular networks have a high level of reliability but are not infallible. Because of this the W5340 has a built in SD card than can store up to 14 days worth of readings should the wireless network fail. Once the link is restored data can continue to be streamed from the unit. For further details please click here

The appointment comes in recognition of the work carried out by Amplicons Security Automation division to develop a range of IP CCTV storage servers. These servers effectively meet the requirements of Milestones extensive surveillance software solutions and as such a partnership has ensued. David Evans Product Manager at Amplicon commented It has not been easy to achieve Milestone Solution Partner status. Companies must prove their pedigree over time if they are to join this scheme and we are delighted that after two years and many successful projects together Amplicon and Milestone are now formally recognised as partners. He added This marriage of high quality video software with our rugged and powerful hardware allows new entrants to the IP CCTV market to source servers and software that are designed to work together minimising the risk of a poorly performing IP CCTV system.IP based CCTV systems have three key components: IP cameras IP surveillance software and the PC or server required to run and view the software. The security market has recently seen an inundation of IP cameras and software but very little attention has been paid to the servers required to run these systems in order to achieve optimal performance.Specifying a server system with sufficient power to handle the large amount of data traffic through the network ports and with the capability to reliably write the data to disk is not a trivial task. Amplicon has extensively tested its servers to generate performance calculations that allow the right server to be specified so that the camera software resolution and frame rate fulfil end-user expectations.

06.06.2008 Amplicon storage servers make IP CCTV affordable

Industrial grade video-servers at under +pound;500 per TBAmplicon is now offering a fully featured storage server with 4TB of storage for under +pound;2000. The Impact-S 2000 is an extremely cost-effective server for IP CCTV applications and has been tested with Milestone Axis Camera Station and several other mainstream IP surveillance packages.In IP CCTV applications where high frame rates and high resolution are required the cost of storage can be prohibitive. The Impact-S 2000 from Amplicon is an off-the-shelf server that will run IP surveillance software and provide up to 4TB of hot-swappable storage. The introduction of the Impact-S 2000 will make IP CCTV a far more attractive prospect to installers and integrators that are looking to make the move from the analogue world or for existing IP converts who want to cut their server costs.The unit is designed to fit into 2U of rack-space and has a rugged metal housing. Quality components are used throughout; enterprise class Hard Disk Drives are used to provide reliable 24/7 operation. In contrast most standard drives are only designed to run an 8-5 (office hours) duty cycle. A separate internal 250GB disk is used to keep the Windows XP operating system on a separate drive and to avoid losing valuable storage space to other tasks. The onboard RAID controller can be used to increase data throughput and reliability.The Impact-S 2000 can be configured to meet the exact requirements of customer applications. In addition Amplicon can offer help with the potentially difficult task of calculating the total storage required in an IP CCTV system. For larger systems that require more storage the Impact-S4000 and Impact-S 6000 provide up to 36TB of storage 64GB of RAM and are equipped with Dual Xeon processors for even higher performance.David Evans Security Automation Product Manager at Amplicon said The Impact-S series is the first range of storage servers designed exclusively for IP surveillance applications. We have conducted extensive testing with the Milestone team at its Denmark HQ to ensure that our servers are optimised for IP CCTV and are capable of running with many concurrent video streams. The feedback that we have received about the price of our systems has also been very encouraging +ndash; our high quality customised systems now regularly undercut the big guns in the server market.+rdquo;

10.03.2008 Amplicon bolsters cellular M2M portfolio through Digi + Vianet

Amplicon has recently partnered with M2M specialists Vianet to make the delivery of cellular connectivity solutions simple. The agreement will allow Amplicon to provide cellular hardware such as 3G routers and GPRS modems with SIM cards that have been extensively tested and are known to work together. In addition the hardware will support all major 3G networks. Amplicon can also offer a SIM through Vianet that locates an alternative network if the one used has gone down. The combined expertise of Amplicon in the hardware domain and Vianet with cellular networks will provide customers with the pre-sales consultancy needed to be able to productively and successfully apply cellular technologies to their purposes. With high-speed cellular networks in the UK now providing data rates of 7.2Mbps over the air many new projects and applications are emerging particularly in the CCTV/ security sector where live video over 3G has become a popular application. Amplicon has also launched several new Digi products to support its continued push into the M2M space. The Digi Connect+reg; WAN GPRSi is a low cost Ethernet and serial (RS232/422/485) GPRS router designed for high volume telemetry applications such as automatic meter reading and fire alarm/ control panel monitoring. The Digi Connect+reg; WAN 3G is a small form-factor and rugged 3G router capable of data rates up to 7.2Mbps. In-vehicle approvals make this router suitable for mobile systems. Finally the Digi Wi-Point 3G+trade; is a combination 3G and wireless LAN router. It is used for providing temporary wireless internet connectivity or as a back-up service thanks to VRRP (Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol) support. David Evans Data Communications Product Manager at Amplicon commented The M2M market is at the beginning of a new substantial growth phase. The market has been crying out for an independent single-source solution provider and we have responded to that need. By pulling together the best hardware the best SIM card provider and by offering free technical consultancy we plan to take a substantial share of the UK market.
